Journeyman Plumber Job Description

The purpose of this operating procedure is to outline the basic function, minimum qualifications, reporting relationships, authority, responsibilities, principal duties and measurement of performance for the position of Journeyman/Master Plumber at Cardom Holdings, Inc. dba Cardom Plumbing & Heating.

Basic Function:

The Journeyman/Master Plumber’s primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Supervision and training of all service and construction technicians. Duties include layout and checking of work of Journeyman, apprentices and laborers; identifying and correcting problems in the plumbing and heating areas; ensure that all repairs and installation meet or exceed current plumbing codes; communicating with the President and customers or their representative to ensure that jobs and tasks are completed correctly and in a timely manner and to the customer’s satisfaction. Instructs and supervises all service or new construction personnel about proper installation and service of products and current code regulations. Primary responsibility in training, coaching, discipline and evaluating the work of apprentices. Journeyman and laborers. Must be willing and able to be on call for after hours, weekend and/or holiday emergencies or scheduled work. Must be able to prepare bids and proposals in an accurate, complete and timely manner and submit to President for approval.

The Journeyman/Master Plumber is required to understand the company policies, and enforce such policies among apprentices, laborers and other company personnel on the jobsites. The Journeyman/Master Plumber must take a proactive stance on Safety and report any concerns or violations immediately to the owner.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications include, and are not limited to, the following:

Must hold a current Journeyman/Master’s license in the State of Colorado and must present the license at the time of application. Experience in HVAC systems is also valuable to this position. If the applicant has an out of state plumbing license, he/she is allowed 30 days by Colorado law to apply for and take the next test. If the applicant does not have a current license or has an out of state license, he/she will be registered as an apprentice until such time that they apply for, take and pass the Colorado Journeyman’s or Master’s test. Please present a copy of your current Residential, Journeyman or Master license. 5 years hands on experience in supervision of Plumbing and HVAC technicians is also required.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED certificate or evidence of experience in a construction- oriented business may substitute on a year-to-year basis for educational requirements.
  • Must have a valid Colorado plumbing license in good standing.

  • Must have strong paperwork skills and have the ability to fill out all business-related information such as timecards, service work order invoices, etc. Must be able to train all apprentices, laborers and Journeyman to do the same.
  • Ensures that instruction, training and information are related in a constructive and diplomatic manner to all that you supervise and that all safety information, warnings and signs are understood and communicated to reporting personnel.

  • Essential physical demands include and are not limited to the following: must be able to safely lift, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, push/pull, walk and stand for continual and extended periods of time. Must be able to safely lift 50 – 100 lbs and over 100 lbs on an occasional basis. Must be able to safely lift 50 lbs or less on a frequent basis. Must be able to balance and safely use ladders on a frequent basis. Must be able to safely work at heights, overhead or in confined spaces. Must be able to work in both cold and hot conditions. Physical demands listed here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential function of the job.

  • Must be on time and prepared for scheduled shift and work entire shift as scheduled. Must provide own transportation to and from work.

  • Must report daily absences, tardiness and any verbal warnings to the owners and General Manager for follow up.

  • This position requires driving a vehicle on behalf of the company. It is required that you must have a clear driving record and valid Colorado driver license, in accordance with the company vehicle insurance requirements. Cardom Plumbing & Heating reserves the right to order DMV or other background check reports at the time of hiring and for the duration of your employment.

  • Supervises all work done by assigned laborers, apprentices and journeymen, assigned to you and you are responsible for the quality and quantity of the work done both for service or new construction. Required to do hands on work and must own required hand tools and use these tools on the job.

Reporting Relationship:

All technicians assigned report to the Journeyman/Master Plumber and the owner. Responsible for training, coaching and evaluating their performance in a productive and diplomatic manner of all assigned personnel. The Plumbing and HVAC Manager reports to the Owner and/or General Manager.

AUTHORITY:

A Journeyman/Master Plumber has the authority to do the following:

    Train, coach, and evaluate the work done by assigned laborers, apprentices and
    journeymen. Assists foreman in disciplinary actions and evaluations

    Request materials, tools, machinery, equipment, etc. required for the job with approval and as designated by the owner in order to complete a job correctly and in a timely manner. Costly materials, tools, and equipment must be submitted to management for approval before purchasing and accounting can process them. All receipts and documents regarding purchases must be turned into the President weekly

  • 3

    May recommend hiring, firing, promotions, or layoffs according to company policy. May not execute these tasks without prior authorization and instructions from the management or ownership.

    During your absence, a Journeyman/Master Plumber may be designated to handle these tasks with prior approval of the ownership.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Must be on time and prepared for scheduled shift and work entire shift as scheduled. Must provide own transportation to and from work (if not driving a company vehicle to and from work)

    Must ensure that you and all supervised technicians respond to service calls in a timely manner and be available for on call emergencies.

    Notify Tom D’Agostino, President immediately of any situations or problems that would result in delays or work not being completed as expected.

    May work occasionally with stressed and upset customers. You and your assigned personnel are required to treat all customers with respect and concern If at any time you feel you cannot assist them in a timely manner or answer their questions completely, you must get the assistance from the owners.

    Responsible for keeping work vehicles cleaned inside and restocked. Must maintain a valid driver’s license and clear record at all time.

    Prepares paperwork accurately and submits in a timely manner. This includes job progress information, timecards, materials requisition sheets, return to stock forms, and other information required for the job. Must train all reporting personnel how to properly fill out paperwork as well.

    May recommend a person for firing, hiring, promotion or reduction in force, but is not in authority to do so without the knowledge and prior permission of ownership. Does written performance evaluations of reporting personnel and submit results to the President.

    All supervisors are examples to their reporting personnel. They should have a sound working knowledge of company and safety policies, code and procedures and work to enforce these policies.

    Maintains inventory of parts, supplies and tools in assigned vehicle needed to perform work. Obtain parts, supplies and tools from inventory or request ordering from the President.

    All employees are required to take a proactive stance on safety. Should an issue or circumstance arise that poses a health or safety issue or hazard, it is the responsibility of all employees to notify their supervisor and/or the safety officer and to immediately notify the owners.

    Supervisors and foreman must report all absences, lateness and disciplinary action to the General Manager or owner for follow-up action.

Measurement of Performance:

Journeyman/Master Plumber will be evaluated based on successfully meeting the basic functions, responsibilities and principal duties as outlined in this job description.

Benefits

Benefits include a set toward your health insurance costs paid once a month starting after your 60th day of full time employment: your benefit begins on the first payroll of the month following the 60th day. You will be required to present a copy of your health insurance benefit bill no later than the start of the stipend payments in order to calculate the percentage Cardom will pay as a stipend. Flex time/vacation: As of the date of this offer, Cardom offers 2 workweeks (10 days) paid flex/vacation time per calendar year. Any unused time by 12/31 will be paid and not rolled over to the next year. This time is accrued as .8333 days per month (no partial months allowed). This accrual begins with the first day of the Only full months worked will have the accrual. If you leave Cardom before a full month worked, that time is not accrued. Time off may not be taken off until you have worked four consecutive months. Each day of Flex Time/Vacation time is paid at 8 hours of your normal pay per hour; for salaried employees it will be paid by their wage divided by 40 hours or salary divided by 5. Employees are required to notify the owners at least 30 days in advance of planned time off and fill out a vacation/time off request form.

Note that this typical schedule is Monday-Friday although since we offer emergency service to our customers sometimes you may need to work on a weekend or evening to help with the emergency call. While this may not happen each week, by accepting this position and signing this offer, you agree to help as needed for any emergency calls. Moonlighting/Side Work

Cardom has established a policy regarding side work and moonlighting work. Side work and moonlighting is considered work that competes directly with the company’s business and therefore is not permitted. Included as moonlighting is performing technical tasks such as plumbing, heating, cooling, HVAC and drain cleaning, as well as the use of company tools, trucks, gas, materials, credit cards or inventory for side/moonlighting work. Also included as moonlighting is performing or assisting in any office-based tasks for any side work or moonlighting such as customer service, dispatching and accounting for competing companies. Moonlighting includes working for your own side company or for another competing business. Moonlighting or working for a competing business is a conflict of interest and never permitted without prior written consent of the President or Owners. Employees who are found doing competing moonlighting work and/or unauthorized use of company materials and resources are subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

Vehicles and company credit cards: Company vehicles are always for company use only, and not for personal use such as running personal errands. In addition the policy for company credit cards is: personal use is prohibited for all reasons including using the credit cards to purchase gas and items for personal use. Receipts must be turned in each time the cards are used not later than before the next payroll run. Also timecard entries must only be for time worked and not for time off or for personal use time. Unauthorized use of vehicles, credit cards or other company property or misreporting of time worked is theft and can result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
